Branching Out

We are not locked into our own Origin Core. We may spend our Potential learning into the other Cores to diversify the potential of our characters. Doing so may be helpful at lower levels, but it is good to keep in mind this ability to multiclass is quickly outshined by putting points into Effect Trees which specialize our characters in different ways. That brings us to the topic of Branching Out. Re-Specialization.

Everyone is a mix of talents. We may or may not be the best or worst at one particular type of task, but able to complete the goal at hand is more important than perfection.

Effect Tree Reserialization

Getting rid of Effects we don’t want or use to open us up to customize our characters is a relatively lengthy process. Reserialization is mostly for unlocking Crown Effects when we’ve accumulated enough Potential. Our first choice for reserialization is Abscission. A note for all forms of Reserialization is any Effect or Unlocked Potential which was granted from a source other than by spending Potential can not be Reserialized.

Abscission

This form of Respecialization is used for Unlocked Potential Actions or Effects related to items, equipment, and crafting recipes which are not part of Effect Clusters or Effect Trees. Potential from Abscission may be spent immediately upon completing the Routine Reserialization or simply added back to the Unspent Potential of your character.

Activation

Routine Reserialization: 30 Minutes

Effect: Forget one Unlocked Potential Action or Effect.

Clipping

This form of Respecialization is used for Root Effects, Branch Effects, or Crown Effects and may take several days to complete.

Activation

Routine Reserialization: 15 Minutes

Effect

Reclaim 1 Potential from a Root Effect, Branch Effect, or Crown Effect.

Caveats

No other Routines may be performed during Pruning until the Effect is fully clipped.
If a Full Routine for a day is put towards Clipping, increase the total to 20 Potential Recovered.
Potential reclaimed by Clipping may only be spent once the Effect being Reserialized is fully clipped.

Once the process has begun, any Actions or Effects associated with the Root Effect, Branch Effect, or Crown Effect are no longer usable unless the Potential is returned to the Effect. Returning the Potential to the effect takes only 1 Action Slot, but fully restores the effect to the character and all Clipping done so far is lost and the character must start over.

Common Scopes: An Effect Tree which cost 10 Potential to unlock takes 2 and a Half Hours of Routine Reserialization Time. An Effect Tree which cost 25 Potential to unlock takes 1 Day and 1 Hour and 15 Minutes of Routine Reserialization Time. An Effect Tree which cost 50 Potential takes 2 days and 2.5 Hours of Routine Reserialization Time.

Rising to the Challenge

The Story Guide may throw any number of situations the party may be ill equipped to handle. Hard general checks combined with taking a day or two to learn a new skill may be the recipe the players need to follow to knock out an obstacle they’re facing. With recission being an option, swapping out effects trees, replanting skills and diversifying our characters in new ways gives us the opportunity to face changes in the campaign and setting. All at the cost of a little downtime to study against the new threat or challenge.

By Design

We don’t need to change our characters mechanically to face every situation. Being well branched out to cover most situations will happen through the selection of effects by the party members. Most times, there is already a player at the table with the tools in hand to make their character shine in a scene with no downtime. There is also the issue of time sensitive events. The Status Quo is always changing.
