Being stuck in the In Between is torture for spirits. Spirits quickly degrade from their life, even if when they originally died they were intact, a form of after life dementia sets in. The In Between is mostly isolated, the spirits are rarely able to interact with other spirits or the living. Every In Between is unique to the individual, and if in life they had no awareness of the spirits, in death they also lack awareness of the other dead. To Somnus Aeternus is a short ritual which sets them free to whatever truly awaits us in the Afterlife.
