Mitigation

During the Resolution Phase of a Damaging Action, Mitigation is applied to Potency.

Mitigation goes through a series of operations.

First, Armor.

Armor generally has two Mitigation Values. Damage Resistance which is a percentage, followed by Damage Reduction which is a flat value. Any damage absorbed by the Armor reduces the durability of the Armor in equal amount.

The Order of Operations:

Armor Damage Resistance then Armor Damage Reduction then Flat Mitigation.

Since this seems complex, here is an example.

A Murci’s claw attack his your Character. The attack has 32 Potency.

You’re wearing Plated Battle Armor which provides 50% Damage Resistance, 7 Damage Reduction, and you have 4 Flat Mitigation against Contusional Damage. On Paper it looks a little bit like this:

Contusional Defense: 50%, -7. -4

To start, the damage is reduced by 50%, dropping it to 16. Another -7 from Damage Mitigation, dropping it to 9.

At this point you know the damage your Armor took, 23, so 23 Durability is removed from the Armor.

Now, your 4 Flat Mitigation Applies - Further dropping the damage from 9 to 5.

After all mitigation was applied to the claw attack, which had a potency of 32, the Injury Card applied to your Character has only 5 Points of Damage on it.

Design Notes: One of our major projects, a Character Tab, includes an automated system where the Potency of an Action is all which is needed, and these calculations will be done automatically.
